About This Blog

This blog explores the top tenets, ideas, and issues across my experience.  I am keeping a running list of the TOP TEN TENETS over time in a permanent spot on the right side of this blog.  That is so that new visitors who don’t read through all my archived posts will see this list, become impressed by my wisdom, and follow me on twitter.

About Me

I work at Red Hat and am responsible for its overall cloud and product strategy across its entire portfolio.  I started working at Red Hat when our primary business was selling boxed copies of Red Hat Linux at CompUSA during the dot com boom and bust.  Over the years, I have led many of Red Hat’s strategic new initiatives, including:

  • Red Hat’s $340m acquisition of JBoss to launch us into the middleware space and target developer platforms
  • Red Hat’s partnership with Exadel to create JBoss Tools and JBoss Developer Studio so that developers would have tools to use on top of JBoss middleware
  • The creation and growth of Red Hat Enterprise MRG, a high performance distributed computing platform which provided revolutionary new capabilities like AMQP messaging, a realtime Linux kernel, and Condor-based grid scheduling
  • Red Hat’s acquisition of Makara to accelerate our efforts around PaaS, leading to the launch of OpenShift
  • Red Hat’s $104m acquisition of ManageIQ to enhance our cloud management capabilities
  • Red Hat’s strategy, marketing, and creation of many new cloud products such as CloudForms, Red Hat’s offering for building and managing private and hybrid IaaS clouds
  • Red Hat’s Cloud Business Unit, as General Manager

Some other tidbits about me:

  • I have worked in open source for over 10 years
  • I travel frequently to meet with customers and speak at events.  I’ve accumulated about 2 million frequent flier miles and eaten everything from shrimp and grits in Charleston to chicken sashimi in Tokyo.  I still have not had a Bo-Berry biscuit, though, even though Red Hat is based in Raleigh, NC. [Edit: On August 1, 2012, I had my first Bo-Berry biscuit.  It was ridiculously sweet, fatty, and good.  I could only finish half a biscuit]
  • I am a reformed engineer.  Before, I was a software developer with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in computer science from MIT writing complex Web and distributed applications.  Now, I create slide presentations and talk for a living
  • I have been featured as one of the most influential people in cloud computing, below Larry Ellison but above my boss, and his boss
  • Even though I work in technology, my wife has a much more popular and award-winning blog than me
